A ramp-kept aircraft ages faster in every way that appearance care can measure: UV chalks the paint, water works into seams, and temperature cycling stresses sealants. A hangar does not remove the care schedule — it roughly doubles the interval.
What the sun actually does
UV exposure breaks down the resins that give paint its gloss, and it does so fastest on upward-facing surfaces — the crown, the horizontal stabiliser, the wing walk areas. The first sign is not fading but chalking: a fine oxidised powder that dulls reflection. By the time chalking is obvious, the paint has thinned measurably, and correction can only recover what remains.
Interiors take parallel damage through the windows: leather dries and cracks along stitch lines, veneers fade unevenly where sun falls. Window shades and covers are cheap; re-dyeing a cabin is not.
Water is patient
Rain is not the problem — trapped water is. It sits in fastener heads, control surface gaps and belly seams, holding dissolved contaminants against metal. Freeze-thaw cycles pump it deeper. De-ice fluid residue left over winter attracts and holds grime. A ramp aircraft needs its drain paths clear and its seams inspected on a rhythm a hangared aircraft can relax.
The economics are straightforward: outdoor storage shifts money from rent to care and depreciation.
