Within a few miles of salt water, an unwashed airframe is an active corrosion experiment. Salt is hygroscopic — it holds moisture against metal continuously. The defence is rinse frequency, protected surfaces, and disciplined attention to the places salt hides.
Why salt is different from dirt
Ordinary contamination sits on the surface and waits. Salt works. It absorbs moisture from the air, so a salt-dusted airframe is effectively wet around the clock, and that electrolyte film is what corrosion chemistry needs. The attack concentrates where inspection is hardest: lap joints, fastener lines, hinge points, the belly, and inside wheel wells where spray gets thrown and never rinsed.
Operating profile matters more than address. An aircraft that flies low over the coast, or through marine haze, salts itself in flight. One based inland but visiting island strips weekly needs coastal discipline regardless of where it sleeps.

Frequency beats intensity. A gentle fresh-water rinse soon after exposure does more than a heavy detail a month later, because it interrupts the wet-metal time that corrosion arithmetic runs on. Sealed paint sheds salt that bare oxidised paint bonds with — which makes ceramic protection a corrosion-adjacent investment on coastal airframes, not a vanity one.
The belly, wells and seams need scheduled degrease-and-inspect attention, because that is where salt survives casual washing. This profile is precisely what the weekly and bi-weekly care cadences exist for, and why the discount curve rewards them: a coastal aircraft on a tight rhythm is cheaper per year than the same aircraft recovered from neglect once.
