De-Ice Boots: The Restoration Window Closes Before Winter Does
Boot cracking is progressive and restoration only works before the cracks reach the fabric. Inspect at the end of every winter, restore in the autumn, and never let dressing residue accumulate — it accelerates the ageing it pretends to prevent.
Why boots age faster than the rest of the airframe
Boots live at the exact point of maximum UV, maximum erosion and maximum thermal cycling, and they flex for a living. Surface oxidation appears as chalking, then micro-cracking, then cracks that reach cord — and only the first two stages are recoverable. The difference between restoration and replacement is often one season of neglect, and replacement is an order of magnitude more expensive.
The autumn routine that saves the spring invoice
Deep-clean to strip oxidation and old dressing, assess crack depth honestly, restore surface compliance with an approved treatment, and document the condition into the record. Do it before de-ice season, because fluid exposure into existing micro-cracks is what turns cosmetic ageing into structural failure. If a boot is already past saving, knowing in October beats discovering in January.
